Forest School is an inspirational programme that offers children regular opportunities to appreciate and enjoy their local woodlands. Forest school originated in Sweden during the 1950’s and was a way of teaching children about the natural world. The idea was adopted in Denmark as an important part of early year’s provisions. The concept was then introduced into Britain in 1995 and has been developed all over the country. Many schools, nurseries and clubs offer this to their children on a regular basis.
At the Wacky Club, we aim to nurture an understanding for natural places and provide opportunities for children to experience nature at first hand through a series of engaging activities and tasks. Forest school experiences brings learning to life and improves a child’s ability to work co-operatively whilst offering them opportunities to take risks, make choices and imitate their own play. The Wacky Club offers Forest School Sessions during Holiday Club all year round (there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing). During a Forest School session, we walk the children to local woodlands, cordon off an area in the woodland and set up a variety of activities for the children. The children have the opportunity to choose from a range of ongoing supervised activities, such as tree climbing, bug hunting and den building, and creative opportunities through the use of real tools.
